How to Play

There is a Skillz N Drillz fun party happening at Citizens Field 30 min prior to league games. This is a great opportunity to meet more people, improve on skills and ask questions. Reach out to Shea for more info or if you would like to get involved.

Ultimate is a non-contact, self-officiated disc sport played by two teams of seven players. The object of the game is to score goals. A goal is scored when a player catches any legal pass in the end zone that player is attacking. A player may not run while holding the disc. The disc is advanced by passing it to other players. The disc may be passed in any direction. Any time a pass is incomplete, a turnover occurs, resulting in an immediate change of the team in possession of the disc. Players are empowered to self-officiate using a framework governed by the principles of Spirit of the Game.

Check out the USAU website for more information on how to play and the newest version of the USAU Rules.

Spirit of the Game

Spirit of the Game is a set of principles which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of playing. Check out our Mission and Values for a more in depth look at Gainesville Ultimate’s stance on these issues.

Definitions

League is a place to learn and grow as a frisbee player. Do not hesitate to make a call, even if you are unsure. Frisbee is a self-officiated sport, so making calls is just part of the game! If you are unsure, feel free to ask for play to stop. You can also always ask for clarification about a rule from your captains or other knowledgeable players.

Pick — A pick may be called if you are playing active defense on someone and anyone gets in your path or prevents you somehow from following your person. This allows you to catch up to the person you are covering. You can call a pick no matter who gets in your way, meaning it could be someone from your team or the other team.

Foul — A foul may be called if someone makes contact with you that impedes you from making a fair catch or a fair throw. Play must stop. The person then agrees that they fouled you or they contest (disagree with) the foul. If they contest the foul, the stall must come in on whatever it was left on. If the foul is not contested, stall goes back to 0.

Double team — You are allowed to have one person marking you at a time. If there are two people within 10 feet of you, this is a double team. When you call double team, the person stalling must drop two counts, and the person that is within 10 feet must step back to 10 feet away.

Violation — If any one of these calls is made and the player does not drop the stall, step back, or otherwise remedy the situation, you may call violation and play stops while they fix it.

Contact — Contact may be called if you are being marked by someone and they make contact with you or the disc you are holding. Stall goes down to 0 immediately and play does not stop. This is similar to a foul but when a foul is called, play stops. Contact is a good call to make to keep the game moving.
